Training Collars for Dogs - How they Work

Training Collars for Dogs have gained a great reputation for curing dog obedience and dog behavior problems faster than using conventional training methods on their own.

The main benefit for the owner and trainer is that the collar provides a short quick response to specific behavior problems.

The best way to use a training collar is to place the collar on the lowest level and use it as an added training method - If you take a look below I will discuss how bes to use the training collar when teaching your dog to sit.

Reinforce already learned behavior.

You can use the training collar (remote) for dog training methods such as...

1. Use the collar to reinforce the 'sit' command - you should have already taught your dog the sit command without the collar (there is no point using the collar if you dog doesn't even know the word sit!)

2. Use a pre-selected intensity level.

3. When you are sure that your dog understands the word sit - put your dog on a leash then walk forward a few steps and then stop and use the 'SIT' command - DO NOT use any stimulation - You are just reminding your dog of the sit command.

4. This time repeat step 3 but this time at the point when you say 'SIT' press the CONTINUOUS stimulation button on your remote trainer and say 'sit' again.

5. Make sure that you release the button as soon as he sit's - this is very very important.

6.If he gets up again - before you release him then press the stimulation button - and release the button after he sit's agin.

7. After you have mastered this - take him for a short walk (and lots of praise) and repeat the process until he has got the 'Sit' command perfect.

8. After you have finished have some play-time with your dog - this is important as it establishes that there is work time and the play time.

Top Tips on How to Train Your Dog

Top Tips on How to Train Your Dog

What are the top tips to train your dog? I'm sure you have heard many differing opinions on how best to train your dog, so lets focus on how to stop a common problem - Begging.
  • To deter or stop begging at the table, always remove your dog from the room when you are getting your dinner prepared.
  • Make sure that your dog responds when you send him away-make sure he is sat down. Make sure that everytime you sit down for your meal that your dog is also sat down.
  • Make sure that noone gives your dog any titbits.
  • Do not give in to your dog's puppy dog eyes when he starts to beg. Look away and make sure that he is still sat down. If he gets up, insist that he goes away and sits down. I know it's hard but it has to be done.
  • Do not keep changing your dog's food in an effort to encourage him to eat-if your vet says it;s ok keep the same diet.
  • Never leave any food around the house as this will encourage him to eat whenever he feels like it.
  • If your dog leaves some food take it away and give it to him later. He will understand that he will go hungary if he does'nt eat when YOU feed him.
  • Make sure you vary the time that you feed your dog. This way your dog won't know when he will be fed next and will give him an incentive to eat the food that he is given.

A Breeders Dog Story - Which Dog Food?

Which Dog Food Should I buy?

This is a question that I have been asked on more than one occasion and it really comes down to 'You are what you eat'

  • I'm sure you have heard this expression and it;s the same for dogs. If we ate junk food all the time we would be extremely unhealthy. We would lose our stamina and put on the pounds. It may also become more difficult for us to concentrate and listen to some of the things that is being said to us - recognising some similarities yet?

  • Dogs need a healthy nutrition too - just like us!
  • Feed your puppy quality food and your puppy will be healthier.
  • Healthy body healthy mind.
Check what is in your dog's food

Check what is in your dog's food...
  • There is a huge difference between 'chicken' and 'chicken byproducts'.
  • Byproducts can be legs, beaks and other unhealthy chicken parts.
  • Check for added sweeteners and extra sugar.
  • Check that your dog is not allergic to certain ingredients - your vet should be able to help.
  • You may have to pay more for dog food but it will show as your dog will develop a healthy coat, clear ears and eyes, stronger muscles and a altogether happier dog.
  • Always check with your vet before you change your dog's diet. You would be surprised that by trying to aid in your dog's digestion by adding yogurt, you may actually be altering your dog's calcium levels.

Dobermann.

Did You Know...

Did you know that the Dobermann was created during the 1880's by a German tax collector, Herr Louis Dobermann. Apparently Herr Dobermann wanted a medium sized dog to protect him when he was working.

Herr Dobermann is thought to have used Weimaraners, German Pinschers, Rottweilers and possibly Manchester Terriers to produce the Dobermann breed.

Gundog Training.

Gundog Training.

When it comes to gundog training you need to have the right breed of dog.
Gundogs include-

-Pointers
-Setters
-Retrievers
-Spaniels

Interestingly gundogs and subsequent gundog training has only been in use or even needed since the invention of the firearm. Gundogs need to be...

-Highly educated, loyal and need lots of stimulation.
Gundogs maybe used for flushing, finding and retrieving game birds. However they also respond extremely well to police dog training so make excellent breeds for the services.

Gundog training and the gundog itself is not allowed to catch or chase the prey. The purpose of the training is for the dog to smell and catch the scents of it's quarry and then lie down flat, remaining immobile and silent until the hunter i.e you the human is aware of the location.

When the hunter has spotted it's quarry the dog should still remain quiet and still and wait and watch as it's master shoots the prey. Then the dog is allowed and expected to go and collect the dead animal.

The dog is also expected to retain a 'soft mouth' so as not to damage the prey with it's teeth.

My Dog Won't Pee Outside When it rains

Why won't my dog pee outside?

Some dogs will pee outside if it's blowing a hurricane and not worry for a second, but others won't poke their heads out the door.

OK this isn't rocket science-would you pee outside if it was raining and blowing a hooly - ugh no!!It my sound weird but use an umbrella when you initially take Fido outside if it stops him peeing on the carpet.

This is a short term fix - so if you would like to see your dog pee outside - REWARD HIM. If it's nice and sunny outside give him a biscuit and some praise but if it's raining a monsoon outside give him a piece of liver or some beef as he will know the difference. It comes down to reward, praise and consistency.

Police Dog Training - Age Limits

I recently read a story regarding a German Shepard dog that needed to be rehomed and the owner was looking at her dog (aged 4) becoming trained as police dog.
Unfortunatly the Police or the army do not take dogs at this age as it is considered too old.

- The general rule for a dog to be accepted as a police dog is the younger the better but no older than two.
- The dog will be tested with a toy and something to tug on to make sure that he wants to play (very important)
- The dog will also have it's temperament tested in a mix of differnt noisy atmospheres to see how the dog responds.
- The dog must not be overly aggressive.

If you want to donate your dog to the Police you chould contact your local police force.
